The Feldenkrais Method®

The Feldenkrais Method® is a way of learning — learning to move more freely and easily, to carry less stress in your body, to stop doing the things that cause you pain. It is not the verbal/intellectual learning you were used to in school. It is learning through, and with, your body — learning that you knew as a child but lost touch with growing up. Through gentle movement and directed attention, it enhances your self-awareness to put you back in touch with yourself, with the fluid, easy movement that is your birthright.

Training the Body for Greater Well-Being and Less Pain

We call this kind of learning somatic education. Through the Feldenkrais Method®, you can increase your ease and range of motion, improve your flexibility and coordination, and rediscover your innate capacity for graceful, pain-free movement. You can also learn sequences of gentle movement that can be done at home to reduce pain related to neuromuscular patterns.

The Feldenkrais Method® is based on principles of physics, biomechanics and an empirical understanding of learning and human development. By expanding your self-image through movement sequences that bring attention to the parts of the self that are out of awareness, you begin to include more of yourself in your functioning movements. You become more aware of habitual neuromuscular patterns and rigidities and expand options for new ways of moving. By increasing sensitivity the Feldenkrais Method® assists you to live your life more fully, efficiently and comfortably.

Feldenkrais Method® Learning Formats

The Feldenkrais Method® can be learned in private touch-based sessions (Functional Integration®), or in group or private verbally-directed movement sessions (Awareness Through Movement®).

Functional Integration® Private Sessions

Functional Integration® sessions are custom-designed to address the client’s specific needs or intentions, including reducing pain through repatterning the body for comfortable, easy movement. This is carried out without the use of any invasive or forceful procedure, and proceeds as an exploration centered around expanding the body’s sense of comfortableness and well-being. In Functional Integration®, the Feldenkrais practitioner uses gentle, non-invasive touching and movement to help you learn to move in more expanded functional ways. It is usually performed with the client lying fully clothed on a table designed specifically for the work. It can also be done in sitting or standing positions.

Awareness Through Movement®

In the Awareness Through Movement® verbally-directed movement sessions, students engage in structured movement explorations that involve thinking, sensing, moving, and imagining. Many are based on developmental movements and ordinary functional activities. Some are based on more abstract explorations of joint, muscle, and postural relationships. The lessons consist of comfortable, easy movements that gradually evolve into movements of greater range and complexity. These lessons translate into daily life as accessible strategies for reducing pain and increasing ease and comfortable movement.
